EXCITING CHANGES TO BIODIVERSITY DELIVERY IN SCOTLAND
Devolution in Scotland means that non-reserved matters are dealt with at country level; therefore we now have responsibility for delivering action in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for priority habitats and species found in Scotland. To enable us to do that, a new structure had been launched to assist effective delivery of targets, based on an ecosystem approach. The new SBF Ecosystem Working Groups structure allows us to achieve better integration with the delivery of the new draft Scottish Biodiversity Strategy Implementation Plans. These new plans are currently going through the Strategic Environmental Assessment process and will be finalized in the next few months. The SBF has determined that an environmental report will need to be prepared in support of the Biodiversity Implementation Plans 2008-2010 (link to determination text)
The new plans reflect the imminent changes to how biodiversity is delivered in Scotland, which will provide a more integrated approach to policy and delivery, based on the ecosystem approach. See issue 27 of 'The Forum' for more details.
